Some things never change
Efforts all in vain
See me try;
See me cry
Until I make it right,
This one time.
I will be lucky, I admit
If ever I get to touch the line
So I never have high hopes
For it might be a long way down.
Up the steepest slope
Handholds I have groped
Littlest step always taken
With the greatest care,
I did.
The most dangerous road, I have tread.
In more sense than one,
I have succeeded
But to what end, I ask.
Not the pleasure of being careless
Aimless and unaffected.
For I was too careful, too sure,
afraid of falling from
my place secure.
